What is the difference between monofocal (normal) and progressive lenses?
Single vision lenses help correct a single vision problem. This can be having trouble seeing only far away (myopia) or only seeing up close (farsightedness). It can also be accompanied by astigmatism.
Progressive lenses (multifocal) are for people who need to correct both distance vision (myopia) and near vision (hyperopia) in the same lens. It may also carry astigmatism or not.
They are progressive, or multifocal, because they have three graduations in a single lens: the near, the intermediate and the far. This is why they are not divided.
If you are under 40 years of age, chances are you don’t need multifocal lenses but monofocals. Progressive lens prescriptions have extra data that says Addition (AD or ADD), so you can identify it in yours.
